Lil Bit came into Cleveland County Animal Control on March 16, 2016 as a 4-year-old stray. She had several tumors hanging from her body (more than our vet said he had ever seen).
CCAC took her to their vet around April 11th thinking she was pregnant. On April 13th the Rescue Coordinator at CCAC posted on their Facebook page that Lil Bit had a very aggressive form of cancer and had approximately two weeks to live according to their vet. They were trying to determine what would be best for her.
The morning of April 15th CARE volunteers were at CCAC pulling other dogs and inquired about her. They were told that she was in the bite quarantine area (where no one could see her) and the RC added that she did not feel that they could find a hospice foster for her. Lil Bit’s picture had ‘disappeared’ from the available album. We all knew her time was just about to be up. Our awesome vice president, Garrett Bender, got on the phone to find out what we could do for her and we put in to pull this sweet girl.
We took her to Boulevard Animal Hospital. They did x-rays and her lungs and chest showed no internal tumors. She did have hookworms and was treated. We scheduled a spay and while she was under they would biopsy a sampling of her tumors.
About two weeks later she was rushed back to the vet and was diagnosed with pyometra, a potentially fatal uterine infection. She had emergency surgery and came through it like a trooper. The biopsy was also done and sent off.
Lil Bit’s tumors are stage 2 cancer. The cancer had not metastasized at this point. The pathology report gave her a life expectancy of 5 years. Imagine that! Also, she is not 4 years old but closer to 8.
As of April 2017, Lil Bit has a permanent foster mom, dad and 4-legged brother. And we can’t forget the sofa for napping. She chases the squirrels, birds and really big bees. She is so happy when company comes that her tail never stops.
She is loved, cherished and pampered. When it’s her time to cross the Rainbow Bridge, she will be held, loved and take a piece of my heart with her.
This story would have been so much different if CARE had not stepped in. There are not enough words to tell you how blessed I am to be part of such a loving and sacrificial organization!
Blessings to you from Lil Bit’s mom.
